Raj Persaud is a Psychiatrist, Doctor and Psychologist who has worked in the British National Health Service for 20 years. He qualifed in medicine from University College London and took a degree in Psychology with First Class Honours from the same Institution, which later went on to make him a Fellow of the University. His training included obtaining a Masters Degree in statistics, an MPhil from the Institute of Psychiatry plus a degree in the History of Medicine. After leaving medical school he immediately secured a training appointment at the Bethlem Royal and Maudsley Hospitals and the Institute of Psychiatry, widely considered then the premiere training and research institutions in psychiatry in Europe. Following obtaining his Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, he was appointed lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry and put in charge of the postgraduate training of the junior doctors there. One of his contributions at the time was compiling a unique video archive of psychiatric symptoms and signs for training. After being appointed a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Bethlem and Maudsley NHS Hospitals Trust, based in South London from 1994-2008, he now works in private practice in Harley St, Central London. He had been an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, University of London, for many years and has also held research appointments at the Institute of Neurology, University of London, and Johns Hopkins University Medical School in Baltimore USA. He has been awarded the rarely bestowed Royal College of Psychiatrist’s Research Prize and Medal; the College also awarded him with the Morris Markowe Prize as well as appointing him a Fellow. Other academic prizes and distinctions include the Osler Medal and the Maudsley Hospital’s Denis Hill Prize. His award-winning research includes almost a hundred papers published in academic journals from the fields of medicine, psychology and psychiatry. The Indepdent on Sunday Newspaper conducted a poll of UK psychiatrists to find the top ten clinicians in the country, and Dr Raj Persaud was one of the youngest doctors to make it on to this distinguished list. He was also voted one of the top twenty gurus in mental health across the world by The Times Newspaper. As Emeritus Visiting Gresham Professor for Public Understanding of Psychiatry, his broadcasts on radio and television were recognised with a Mental Health Media Award.
